Reflecting on italian neorealism
The Italian Neorealism film movement reflected the uncertainty within Italian society following the Second World War. Filmmakers were independent, feeling free to convey the nation’s attitudes against Fascism without suppression or control from governmental producers. Films like Paisà and The Bicycle Thief exposed the world to the true desolation of the Italian nation. Perhaps this is what Italian Neorealist producers wanted global audiences to know – Italy was in crisis, and film was their cry for help.
